Gym Class Heroes

Gym Class Heroes is an American rap rock band from Geneva, New York, United States. The group formed in 1997 when Travie McCoy met drummer Matt McGinley during their high school gym class. The band's music displays a wide variety of influences, including hip hop, rock, funk, and reggae. After the addition of guitarist Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo and bassist Eric Roberts in 2003, the group was signed to Fueled by Ramen and Decaydance Records (Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz's independent record label), on which they released their debut album, The Papercut Chronicles. The group gained a strong fan base while promoting the album, appearing at festivals such as The Bamboozle and Warped Tour. In 2006, the group released the gold-selling album As Cruel as School Children. On September 9, 2008, Gym Class Heroes released their third album, The Quilt, which contained numerous collaborations with other artists. The band went on hiatus in 2009, a time in which the members pursued various side projects. Travie McCoy released his solo debut album Lazarus in June 2010. Lumumba-Kasongo has been working on his side-project Soul, while McGinley now drums in the rock group Kill the Frontman. The group released The Papercut Chronicles II on November 15, 2011. MC Travie McCoy and drummer Matt McGinley became friends at their local high school's gym class in ninth grade in Geneva, New York. They officially came together in 1997. The band formed when bassist Ryan Geise and drummer Matt McGinley were performing at a party in an instrumental band with no vocals. McCoy, who was in attendance at the party, took the microphone onstage and started rapping. A week later, the group came together and started making music. The original group began playing college parties and BBQs, birthday parties, clubs, and festivals which eventually led to larger venues throughout the northeast, including four years on Warped Tour (2003, 2004, 2006, 2008). McCoy won MTV's Direct Effect MC Battle and as a prize, appeared in Styles P's video "Daddy Get That Cash". The group had three more releases from 1999 to 2004: Hed Candy, Greasy Kid Stuff, and ...For the Kids.
Gym Class Heroes is noted for displaying hip-hop influences while performing alongside artists who are mainly considered to be rock, pop-punk, and metal bands. McCoy says of the band's musical style, "We've been the proverbial sore thumb our entire career. Even before we got signed to Fueled by Ramen, we were playing shows with death metal and hardcore bands and whoever would let us play with them. I wouldn't even consider us a hip-hop band. Musically, it's just all over the place."
The band acknowledges '80s funk-influenced R&B acts such as Prince and Ready for the World as major influences on its sound. Each member draws from different types of music for inspiration, with drummer Matt McGinley saying "there aren’t many [types of music] we agree on." McCoy cites 1970s blue-eyed soul group Hall & Oates as his biggest musical influence. Guitarist Disashi Lumumbo-Kasanga is mainly influenced by rock music, citing Jimi Hendrix and Muse as an inspiration for his guitar playing. Bassist Eric Roberts incorporates reggae styles into his playing, as well as styles influenced by metal bands such as the Dillinger Escape Plan and Meshuggah. McGinley favors funk and rock stylistics inspired by groups such as Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and 311.
Additionally, the band is noted for not using samples in its music, a practice commonly used in hip-hop. McCoy states that "It’s more fun and organic in the live show. There’s definitely a lot of acts that can pull off a DJ/MC thing but then a lot that can’t. Also I guess it’s all we know." However, As Cruel as School Children does contain samples, with McGinley commenting, "We’ve always been a band and we never did sampling at all before but within the last couple of years we’ve embraced it more. In the songs we did with Patrick Stump we used it."

Gym Class Heroes - As Cruel as School Children (2006)
As Cruel as School Children is the third Gym Class Heroes album released by Fueled by Ramen. It was released on July 25, 2006. It was produced by Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump. Both versions of these albums have the Parental Advisory sticker on them. The demos we have now are just bananas, ...(Guitarist) Disashi is just a monster on the new stuff. You're going to hear a lot more of him singing on this one and a lot more of his guitar skills that I don't think he really got to flex on the last record." The album debuted at number fourteen on the Billboard 200 with 32,266 copies sold in its first-week.

Gym Class Heroes - Clothes Off (Remix)

Clothes Off (Remix)
Feat. Reef the Lost Cauze, Ghostface Killah, Patrick Stump

[Chorus: Patrick Stump (Travis McCoy)]
We have to take our clothes off (so sexy)
We have to party all night
We have to take our clothes off
To have a good time, oh no, no, no, no

[Travis McCoy]
Excuse me miss, I couldn't help but to notice how alone you are
I dig your attitude and how you're acting like you own the bar
Got me flashing keys and I don't even own a car
Front like you ain't feeling my charm, because I know you are
I'm trying to see how your lips feel
Oh I'm sorry, my name is Travey and I'm pretty much a big deal
Oh, you've never heard of me, that sounds absurd to me
The way you stole my attention was flat out burglary
What do you say let's exit stage left so me and you can
Possibly reconvene and play some naked peek-a-boo
Cause after all the blouse you're wearing is kinda see through
And it's obvious I'm heading wherever you're leading me too
I'm such an angel with a devilish angle
And quite the certified sweet talker
And you're buying every line of it girl
And I don't really blame you
If I was in your shoes I'd probably do the same too

[Chorus w/Reef the Lost Cauze ad-libs]

[Reef the Lost Cauze]
I went from ashey to classy, now they ask me
Ig they can have me, in the back seat
Of the Caddy, callin me daddy, smackin the phatty
Ghost and Travey, pass the hashies
Damn ma, them denims look tight
I'm into sex, any sex, I need you tonight
Cuz I'm not sleepin, and nah, I'm not creepin
No wife, no kids boo, you can stay the weekend
No pajamas, nothin to sleep in
Seems shallow, so jump in the deep end
Why go out baby, we can eat in
I don't discriminate color, there's no reason
You can be Black, Asian, Puerto Rican
German, Indian, Scicilian, Norweigan
No matter your region or click you be in
Straight from the hood, or a cracka like wheat thins

[Chorus]

[Hook: Travis McCoy X2]
Travis got chicks, all hot chicks
Indie-rock chicks and hip-hop chicks
Thin chicks, round chicks
Black, white, yellow, and brown chicks

[ODB Sample]
Ghostface Killaaaaaaah

[Ghostface Killah]
Yo, yo, whatup gorgeous, it's Toney, I seen you from affar
With that milkshake, bringin all the boys to the yard
Had to scoop you, like hey, take a look at my girlfriend
Hourgalss figure with your hair and your curls in
Sexy, down just to party all night
But you gotta take your clothes off just to make it right
Have a good time, good chance you can be mine
Like sixty eight, I only want a percent of your time
But I'm good for it love, the bank got crazy os
Catch me on tour with them Gym Class Heroes
You said, "Wait you Ghostface from the Wu-Tang Clan?
Where your boys at, my girl's dying to meet RZA man"
I laughed, ordered a chill bottle of Goose
You can get loose, I'll call the troops
Now we pulling out the Bentlies and six hundred Coups
But you gotta promise to get down to your birthday suit

[Chorus X2]

[Hook X2]

I, I love the colorful clothes she wears
And the way the sunlight plays upon her hair
I hear the sound of a gentle word
On the wind that lifts her perfume through the air

Skidilly beat bop we rock
Steady over kicks and snares
So what you scared for, unprepared for?
Tunnel rat schematics far from your average rapper's new era

That nonsense behind us

Splinter cell movements. turnstyle jumper
Punks step up to get beat down bumper
Alias and bright colors
So bright leave you cryin' like late night mothers
Hover board kick flips
Landin' a little to the left
As you can bet every result was a split lip
Skip school make shortcuts
Act foolish like kids with the windows on the short bus

Welcome to shellshock
Ringin' in your ears like the bells that el rock
It doesn't matter whether or not your cell locks
If you can find silence in the coldest cell block
This is shellshock

For thinking that I let my players go to waste (no)
Top of the food chain but way too cool to not drop a little

Gym Class Heroes - Under The Bridge

Under The Bridge
Originally by Red Hot Chili Peppers

From up above the cloud to under the bridge
I'll always have a best friend in the city I live

Sometimes I feel I don't have a partner
Sometimes I feel like my only friend
Is this city I live in, this big rotten apple
As lonely as I am together we cry

I drive on her streets 'cause she's my companion
I walk through her hills 'cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds and she kisses me windy
Now I never worry, now that is a lie

I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

It's hard to believe that there's nobody out there
It's hard to believe that I'm all alone
At least I have her love, this city she loves me
Lonely as I am together we cry

I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

Oh no yeah, yeah
Oh no now yeah, yeah
Oh no now yeah, yeah

From the highest to high, to the lowest of low
From the hottest of hot, to the coldest of cold
From the day we pop out, to the day we grow old
From the four track tapes to over 10 million sold

From the poorest of poor, to the richest of rich
Already told ya ass before that simple living's a bitch, biatch
From up above the clouds to under the bridge
I'll always have a best friend in the city I live

The bridge is over, the bridge is over, pa da pa pa
The bridge is over, the bridge is over, ha ha

The bridge is over, the bridge is over, pa da pa pa
The bridge is over, the bridge is over, ha ha

The bridge is over, the bridge is over, pa da pa pa
The bridge is over, the bridge is over, ha ha

The bridge is over, the bridge is over

Oh no yeah, yeah
Oh no now yeah, yeah
Oh no now yeah, yeah

Gym Class Heroes - Kid Nothing And The Never-Ending Naked Nightmare

Kid Nothing And The Never-Ending Naked Nightmare

[Verse:]
Chchch-Children put on your angry faces
Mothers hide your daughters
I've been busy burning bridges hovering over troubled waters
City folk'll never understand the country mouse's jokes
They'd rather sit and watch the lemmings lead each other to the slaughter
This is me thanking you dearly
Sincerely, from the bottom of what's left of my misery magnet
Guess I been too busy being stagnant
And if I ever steer you wrong
Grab the wheel and jerk it left
I'm only human but admitted I'm such a beautiful mess

[Chorus:]
With the Mad Hatter cackle and the Cheshire cat smile (haha)
Put the jabberwocks cadaver with derelict juvenile (oooh)
The futures got Travie engraved on a name plate that I copped on Fulton
While the passers poppin pills somewhere on the other side of Brooklyn

So this is me in front of the class naked
This reoccurring nightmare never ending
So I'm saying Hello (So I'm saying Hellooo)
And now I'm screaming Hello (Now I'm screaming Hellooo)
Is anybody out there?
Now this is me in front of the class naked
This reoccurring nightmare never ending
So I'm saying Hello (So I'm saying Hellooo)
And now I'm screaming hello
Can anybody hear me?

[Verse:]
Baby let's ride the steel horse until it stops galloping
And let the nerds get revenge on these stars with Lamar's javelin
Here Betty, put this Vader mask on and take me to the dark side bumpin your
Favorite song
And I promise I'll stand still until the feeling is gone
And if I slip and bust it's cause we must be doing it wrong
Oh by the way
If you happen to meet the asshole that wrote the manual
Tell'em large Marge sent me to murk'em and make it casual

[Chorus:]
With the Mad Hatter cackle and the Cheshire cat smile (Haha)
Put the jabberwocks cadaver with derelict juvenile (Ooooh)
The futures got Travie engraved on a name plate that I copped on Fulton
While the passers poppin pills somewhere on the other side of Brooklyn

So this is me in front of the class naked
This reoccurring nightmare never ending
So I'm saying Hello (So I'm saying Hellooo)
And now I'm screaming Hello (Now I'm screaming Hellooo)
Is anybody out there?
Now this is me in front of the class naked
This reoccurring nightmare never ending
So I'm saying Hello (So I'm saying Hellooo)
And now I'm screaming hello

[Travie:]
So I'm leaving the grocery store the other day
Probably one of the hardest things I have to do with my anxiety and all
And a Women walks up to me
(Hey aren't you Travie?)
She doesn't say hello, she just grabs me
And I can feel my heart beating harder and harder and harder (Uh yeah)
(I'm from Upstate too)
(Uh, Cool)
I can feel the skin on my chest getting tighter and tighter
Until I just, until I just
FUCKING SPONTANIOUSLY COMBUST
AHHH

And now I'm screaming hellooo
Can anybody hear me?

Gym Class Heroes - The Fighter

The Fighter
Feat. Ryan Tedder

Just waking up in the morning
And to be well,
Quite honest with ya,
I ain't really sleep well
Ya ever feel like your train of thought's been derailed?
That's when you press on - Lee nails
Half the population's just waitin to see me fail
Yeah right, you're better off trying to freeze hell
Some of us do it for the females
And others do it for the retail

But I do it for the kids, life threw the towel in on
Everytime you fall it's only making your chin strong
And I'll be in your corner like mick, baby, til the end
Or when you hear a song from that big lady

[Bridge]
Until the referee rings the bell
Until both your eyes start to swell
Until the crowd goes home
What we gonna do ya'll?

[Chorus - Ryan Tedder]
Give em hell, turn their heads
Gonna live life til we're dead.
Give me scars, give me pain
Then they'll say of me, say of me, say of me
There goes the fighter, there goes the fighter
Here comes the fighter
That's what they'll say of me, say of me, say of me,
This one's a fighter

[Verse 2]
And if I can last thirty rounds
There's no reason you should ever have your head down
Six foot five, two hundred and twenty pounds
Hailing from rock bottom, loserville, nothing town

Text book version of a kid going nowhere fast
And now I'm yelling "kiss my ass"
It's gonna take a couple right hooks, a few left jabs
For you to recognize you really ain't got it bad

[Bridge]
Until the referee rings the bell
Until both your eyes start to swell
Until the crowd goes home
What we gonna do ya'll?

[Chorus - Ryan Tedder]
Give em hell, turn their heads
Gonna live life til we're dead.
Give me scars, give me pain
Then they'll say of me, say of me, say of me
There goes the fighter, there goes the fighter
Here comes the fighter
That's what they'll say of me, say of me, say of me,
This one's a fighter

Everybody put yo hands up
What we gonna do? [x7] ya'll

If you fall pick yourself up off the floor (get up)
And when your bones can't take no more (c'mon)
Just remember what you're here for
Cuz I know Imma damn sure

Give em hell, turn their heads
Gonna live life til we're dead.
Give me scars, give me pain
Then they'll say of me, say of me, say of me
There goes the fighter, there goes the fighter
Here comes the fighter
That's what they'll say of me, say of me, say of me,
This one's a fighter

'Til the referee rings the bell
'Til both ya eyes start to swell
'Til the crowd goes home,
What we gonna do kid?

Gym Class Heroes - Lazarus, Ze Gitan

Lazarus, Ze Gitan

Let's go

My first love was a chick from the sixth named Geneva
Had to take the 88 upstate just to see her
My mother never liked her
My father didn't neither
After 22 years I got eager and had to leave her.
Now I'm realizing how much I really need her
But something told me follow my heart and head eastwards
That's when I met brooklyn, but brooklyn was a cheater
The second I turned my back
Jay and Weezy tagged teamed her
So I started packing, she asked me "what happened?"
Told her I was leavin for her older sister Manhattan,
Manhattan was into rap so we started chit-chatting
And she was chinese, italian, black and a quarter latin
Super high maintenance and way too into fashion
Didn't even tell her piece and left her number on a napkin
Damn, but back then was back then
Now I heard she went hollywood and began acting

[Chorus:]
Oh, I've been looking for love
In all the wrong places
Oh somebody take me home
I've been falling in love
With all the wrong faces
Oh somebody take me home

Please take me home

And after manhattan, I was acting silly
Messing with a stick body jewel named Philly
But that didn't work out too great
I'm vegetarian and all she ate was cheese steak
I went to Baltimore for Mary Ann
And almost got married man
But she was self-centered always stuck in Mary Land
I knew a slim thing named virginia
I swear to god her body's smoking but she kept gettin thinner
And I'll never forget my first trissie
In the bins with the Carolina twins gettin busy
I know they miss me but I had to leave early
On the 85 doin 85 riddin' dirty
And my Geogia piece Savanna
Used to stay in Atlanta
Accent so thick I couldn't even understand her
And that's when I realized
I damn near ran through the whole I-95

[Chorus:]
Oh, I've been looking for love
In all the wrong places
Oh somebody take me home
I've been falling in love
With all the wrong faces
Oh somebody take me home

Please take me home

Yeah, then I met miami, she was spanish
Miami te amo, me llamo Travie
She could tell that I wasn't bilingual
I don't know todito, but I know un poquito
We can hit south beach and drink mojitos
And maybe you can introduce me to your people
Ha, yo no voy pa' tra
My first love keep on calling
You no voy pa' ya
I think I finally found where imma stay
On I-95
But never forget the 88, no

[Chorus:]
Oh, I've been looking for love
In all the wrong places
Oh somebody take me home
I've been falling in love
With all the wrong faces
Oh somebody take me home
