Mandy Moore

Biography

Born Amanda Leigh Moore, 10 April 1984, Nashua, New Hampshire, but raised in Orlando, Florida, USA. One of the big success stories of the US pop charts in 1999, Mandy Moore rose to prominence after touring dates with *NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys. Her debut single, "Candy", sold half a million copies, many of the sales attributable to a promotional website that registered over 100,000 "hits" a day at its peak.

Moore had wanted to be a performer from the age of six, when she sang the hits of the day. By the time she attended a summer musical camp aged nine she was even more convinced about her career prospects: "My parents thought it was just a phase I'd grow out of, but I stuck to it and begged them for acting and voice lessons." Before launching her solo career she became known as Orlando's National Anthem Girl, performing "The Star Spangled Banner" at several sports events, including Chris Evert's Pro-Celebrity Tennis Tournament. Sales of "Candy" were enough to convince 550 Music to rush-release So Real, her predictably over-produced debut album, before the end of the millennium. The album was repackaged as I Wanna Be With You, with the addition of five new songs, the following June.

Moore's self-titled follow-up showed a positive move into material of a more substantial nature; given the songs Moore certainly has the voice. The singer made her impressive lead actress debut the following year in A Walk To Remember. Following one further release for Epic, the 2003 covers collection Coverage, Moore signed a new recording contract with Sire Records.
